Drew Romo
Drew Romo Dealing with finger injury
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 8:20 PM
Romo is not on the Triple-A Albuquerque roster to begin the season as he is being evaluated for a finger injury, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.
Analysis: Romo entered spring training projected to make the Opening Day roster, though Hunter Goodman performed extremely well to claim the backup catcher job. The severity of the issue is unclear, but Romo should make an appearance in the majors at some point in 2025, assuming he isn't sidelined for a lengthy period.
Sam Hilliard
Sam Hilliard Designated for assignment
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 10:57 AM
The Rockies designated Hilliard for assignment Thursday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The move frees a spot on the 40-man roster for Mickey Moniak, who was officially signed Thursday. Hilliard had an .812 OPS in 58 games with Colorado last season, but he posted a .489 OPS and 48.2 percent strikeout rate this spring and it cost him a job. He could draw interest on waivers from a team in need of outfield help.
Mickey Moniak
Mickey Moniak Finds work in Colorado
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 8:29 PM
Moniak signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Rockies on Wednesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Moniak was cut by the Angels on Tuesday but didn't have to wait long to sign with another club on a major-league deal. The 26-year-old outfielder slashed .219/.266/.380 across 418 plate appearances with the Halos last season but has a good chance to see those numbers increase in 2025 now that he gets to play his home games at Coors Field. With Brenton Doyle locked in as Colorado's center fielder, the team may look to use Moniak more often in the corner outfield spots, and his left-handed bat could grant him a strong-side platoon role.
Nick Martini
Nick Martini Gets spot on 40-man roster
Sun, Mar 23, 2025, 12:47 PM
The Rockies selected Martini's contract Sunday.
Analysis: Martini has had a fantastic spring, slashing .389/.511/.556 with two homers, four RBI, two stolen bases and a 7:6 BB:K over 45 plate appearances. His strong play has earned him a spot on Colorado's Opening Day roster, and he could land a starting role in left field to begin the campaign with Zac Veen optioned to the minors Sunday.
Zac Veen
Zac Veen Sent to Triple-A
Sun, Mar 23, 2025, 12:34 PM
The Rockies optioned Veen to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.
Analysis: The 23-year-old seemed like a solid bet to be starting in the outfield Opening Day for the Rockies after Nolan Jones was traded to the Guardians, but the organization will instead send him back to Albuquerque to begin the campaign. Veen had a .757 OPS in 21 games in his first taste of the Triple-A level last year, and he may not have to wait long before making his big-league debut in 2025. Nick Martini appears set to open the year as Colorado's primary left fielder after having his contract selected Sunday.
Tyler Freeman
Tyler Freeman Headed to Colorado
Sat, Mar 22, 2025, 6:51 PM
Freeman was traded from the Guardians to the Rockies on Saturday in exchange for Nolan Jones, SI.com reports.
Analysis: Freeman was in competition for playing time at second base with Cleveland this spring and maintained an impressive 1.080 OPS across 39 at-bats -- including eight extra-base hits. He's struggled to turn his contact-heavy approach at the plate into meaningful big-league production in partial playing time across the last three campaigns, but playing at Coors Field could help him turn a corner. Freeman should get regular run at second base to begin the 2025 season with Thairo Estrada (wrist) sidelined, and he could also fill a small-side platoon in left field.
Nolan Jones
Nolan Jones Scratched Saturday
Sat, Mar 22, 2025, 2:57 PM
Jones was scratched from the lineup ahead of Saturday's Cactus League game against the White Sox, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Rockies haven't yet given a reason for Jones' removal from the starting nine, but the team should offer some clarity shortly. In the meantime, Benny Montgomery will patrol left field and bat eighth.
Jaden Hill
Jaden Hill Optioned to Albuquerque
Sat, Mar 22, 2025, 12:26 PM
The Rockies optioned Hill to Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday.
Analysis: Hill made his major-league debut with the Rockies last season, turning in a 5.06 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 10.2 innings over nine appearances. His shaky performance followed him into spring training (six runs allowed in 8.1 innings), so the Rockies will send him back to Albuquerque's bullpen to begin 2025.
Kyle Farmer
Kyle Farmer In line for second base job
Fri, Mar 21, 2025, 1:25 PM
Farmer is expected to handle the bulk of the second-base reps for the Rockies to begin the season while Thairo Estrada (wrist) is sidelined, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Estrada will miss 4-to-8 weeks after being diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, so Farmer will be given a lengthy look. The 34-year-old slashed only .214/.293/.353 last season with the Twins, but he could be relevant in deeper leagues while playing half his games at Coors Field. If Farmer struggles out of the gate, it could open the door for prospect Adael Amador to get another look.
Thairo Estrada
Thairo Estrada Out with fractured wrist
Fri, Mar 21, 2025, 1:21 PM
Estrada was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist Friday and is expected to be sidelined 4-to-8 weeks, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The second baseman suffered the injury Wednesday on a hit-by-pitch and will now be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Estrada is scheduled to undergo another set of X-rays in about four weeks, so his absence is likely to run through mid-May, at least. In the meantime, the Rockies plan to give Kyle Farmer significant run at the keystone to begin the season. Prospect Adael Amador might also get a look if he has a quick start to the campaign at Triple-A Albuquerque.
Austin Gomber
Austin Gomber Set for Saturday start
Thu, Mar 20, 2025, 8:40 PM
Gomber (shoulder) will start Saturday's Cactus League game against the Cubs, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.
Analysis: Gomber has been sidelined by a sore shoulder since early March, and the team announced Thursday that he will begin the season on the injured list. He'll reportedly be ready for his debut by mid-April, and the fact that he'll take the mound Saturday supports a quick return to action.
Thairo Estrada
Thairo Estrada Returns to lineup Thursday
Thu, Mar 20, 2025, 3:34 PM
Estrada (head) will start at second base and bat leadoff in Thursday's Cactus League game versus the Rangers.
Analysis: Estrada last played on Saturday, when he had to be lifted from the game after being struck in the head by the White Sox' Michael Taylor's foot while tagging him out at second base. He didn't suffer any known concussion and is now ready to go after a few days of rest. Estrada will be the Rockies' primary second baseman in 2025.
Austin Gomber
Austin Gomber Poised to open season on IL
Thu, Mar 20, 2025, 9:01 AM
Gomber (shoulder) will begin the season on the 15-day injured list, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Gomber is recovering well from left shoulder soreness, but he's made just one appearance this spring and that was back on Feb. 25. The left-hander is expected to be ready to rejoin the Rockies' rotation early on in the season. Colorado will operation with a four-man rotation until Gomber is ready.
Keston Hiura
Keston Hiura Sent to minor-league camp
Wed, Mar 19, 2025, 11:02 AM
The Rockies reassigned Hiura to minor-league camp Wednesday.
Analysis: Though he's just 28 years old and has three double-digit home-run seasons on his resume at the MLB level, Hiura's high strikeout rates and lack of defensive flexibility have made it difficult for him to stick in the big leagues over the past two seasons. He spent the majority of the 2024 campaign at the Triple-A level and settled for a minor-league deal with the Rockies this winter upon reaching free agency. Hiura hit just .167 and struck out in nine of his 18 at-bats in Cactus League play, so his dismissal from big-league camp comes as little surprise. He's expected to open the season at Triple-A Albuquerque.
Kyle Freeland
Kyle Freeland Starting Opening Day
Sun, Mar 16, 2025, 1:10 PM
Manager Bud Black announced Sunday that Freeland will start Opening Day against the Rays on March 28, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The left-hander is one of Colorado's longest-tenured players and will take the mound in the season opener after posting a 5.24 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 85:26 K:BB across 113.1 innings last year. Freeland has pitched well in spring training with three earned runs allowed and an 11:1 K:BB over 9.2 frames.
Lucas Gilbreath
Lucas Gilbreath Starting 2025 in Triple-A
Sun, Mar 16, 2025, 10:51 AM
The Rockies optioned Gilbreath to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.
Analysis: Gilbreath made his 2024 debut in mid-August after recovering from Tommy John surgery from March of 2023. He underwent neurogenic thoracic surgery near his left neck/shoulder in the offseason, which limited him to one outing in spring training came March 10 against the Giants, when he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one in one frame. Gilbreath will begin the 2025 regular season in Triple-A, but he should have an opportunity to rejoin the parent club at some point in the year when there's a need of depth in the bullpen.
Thairo Estrada
Thairo Estrada Removed early Saturday
Sat, Mar 15, 2025, 6:03 PM
Estrada was pulled from Saturday's Cactus League game against the White Sox after getting hit in the head, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Estrada was hit in the head by Michael Taylor's foot while tagging him out at second base in the fourth frame. Estrada was able to finish the half-inning but was replaced by a pinch hitter in the fifth. Manager Bud Black said the incident shook Estrada up quite a bit, but his removal was precautionary and he likely won't need to miss much time.
Jacob Stallings
Jacob Stallings Pops first homers of spring
Thu, Mar 13, 2025, 9:22 PM
Stallings went 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Guardians.
Analysis: Stallings is locked in as Colorado's primary catcher to begin the season, mostly due to his sturdy defense and veteran leadership. However, he flashed some pop by delivering his first homers of spring training Thursday. Overall, Stallings has collected six hits across 21 at-bats this spring.
Kris Bryant
Kris Bryant Optimism disappearing
Wed, Mar 12, 2025, 11:18 PM
Bryant went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Padres.
Analysis: Bryant began the spring positively with a two-run home run with an exit velocity of 111.8 mph. However, he's gone just 2-for-19 with six strikeouts since. Positively, Bryant has remained healthy and is still projected to serve as Colorado's primary DH.
Nick Martini
Nick Martini Competing for bench role
Wed, Mar 12, 2025, 10:54 PM
Martini has a chance to crack Colorado's Opening Day roster as a reserve outfielder, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Martini is in Rockies' camp as a non-roster invitee, but he's hit .308 with six walks and a pair of homers across 26 at-bats. He's unlikely to be a regular in the lineup, but the struggles of Sam Hilliard and even Jordan Beck this spring have opened the door for Martini to make the Opening Day roster.
